Are you Prepared for a Cyber Attack?

Cyber Attacks have become a very real threat to every business that is connected to the internet – yes, any business. Many business owners think that if they don’t store financial records or keep servers with personally identifiable information on them that they do not have an exposure to this threat. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Any business can be a victim of several different Cyber Attacks.

Some of the biggest questions you should ask yourself are:

What would it mean to my business if I couldn’t access the internet for an extended period?

What would I do if all the data on my system was erased?

What would happen if a malicious email was forwarded on by one of my employees and corrupted my clients’ systems?

How would I respond if my CFO wired money to a hacker that spoofed my email?

These are all very real scenarios that business owners face. So, what should you do? The first thing you can do is insure your risk to Cyber Attacks. There are many robust insurance policies out there that will respond and provide coverage for the above scenarios to help businesses get back up and running. However, that is where most risk managers stop the conversation.

I would challenge you to contemplate the indirect costs associated with having a Cyber Attack affect your business. You may lose customer goodwill or have to spend countless hours of management’s time to put the pieces back together. What would that cost the business in terms of lost customers or lost productivity? These are all costs that need to be identified and properly managed.

The best way to avoid the costs associated with these risks is to prevent the attack from happening in the first place. Cyber Insurance is a great first step but that should be viewed as the last resort after the claim has happened. The best strategy a business owner can use is Prevention. In the link below you will find some helpful instructions on what to do to prevent a Cyber Attack from happening, and steps to take if you are a victim of a Cyber Attack.
