Most contractors spend years trying to keep good employees from leaving.
Scott Vogeli built his business assuming they eventually will.
As Owner of Modern Edison Electric, Scott runs what he calls a "franchise on payroll." Experienced journeymen don't just install – they run their own pod, complete with a marketing assistant, sales coaching, and their own numbers to hit. For three to four years, they operate like independent contractors inside his company. Then they launch on their own, or stay and move into coaching, finance, or project management.
It's a deliberate trade-off. Scott expects the turnover and plans around it, pairing predictable churn with a recruiting pipeline built to keep pace – the way a university expects students to graduate. What looks like a retention risk on paper functions instead as a system built to scale beyond the owner.
Scott also shares the story behind the Safe Home Method, the electrical fire prevention service he developed with the Sacramento Fire Department. It turned Modern Edison from a general electrical contractor into a specialized business and helped take the company from roughly $40K–$50K months to around $200K months.
If you own, lead, or help run a trades business, this episode will hit home.
