Homeowner’s Insurance and Your Lawn Mower…Are you Covered?

I think it is safe to say that most people reading this post have used their lawn mower (or similarly their snow blower) to help out a neighbor while they are on vacation or are a little too busy.  I wonder if anyone has ever informed these people that they may no longer be covered under a standard Homeowner’s Policy. Has anyone ever informed you of the coverage gap?

This was a major coverage limitation that was made by the Insurance Services Office (ISO) when they revised their Homeowner’s Form in 2000.  It no only excludes coverage while using your lawn mower to mow your neighbor’s lawn but excludes the lawn mower from coverage forever.  To learn a little more about this topic click the following article link from the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of America website: ConsumerRidingMowers

PCIP – Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan

If you know someone who has a pre-existing condition, gone without coverage for 6 months or that’s been denied health insurance coverage…please read. I can answer any questions, you may have about PCIP.

In March of 2010, Congress passed and President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act—the new health insurance law. The law creates a new program – the Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan — to make health insurance available to you if you have been denied coverage by private insurance companies because of a pre-existing condition.

The Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan (PCIP), which is administered by either your state or the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, provides a health coverage option if you have been without health coverage for at least six months, you have a pre-existing condition or have been denied health coverage because of your health condition, and are a U.S. citizen or reside here legally.

This program may be able to help you, if you’ve been locked out of the insurance market, until 2014. In 2014, you will have access to affordable health insurance choices through a new competitive marketplace called an Exchange and you will no longer be discriminated against based on a pre-existing condition.

The Program:

  • Covers a broad range of health benefits, including primary and specialty care, hospital care, and prescription drugs. All covered benefits are available to you, even to treat a pre-existing condition.
  • Doesn’t charge you a higher premium just because of your medical condition.
  • Doesn’t base eligibility on income.

$1,000,000 Claims on the Rise!

As I was reading one of my industry’s trade magazines, Best’s Review, (cover-to-cover…) an article titled, “Million-Dollar Claims Grow more Frequent” by Kathy Childs-Healy jumped out at me. These types of claims used to be very rare but as the article points out they have increased eightfold since 2003. What is an even more staggering statistic is that claims in excess of $2,000,000 have increased five times since 2005. These higher claim values have come in response to higher health care costs and a highly litigious society. The article mentions one aspect of the health care industry in particular and that is long term drug treatments. “For example, costs for Factor VIII deficiency (Hemophilia A) with acquired inhibitor, can average $750,000 per year.”

So with claims amounts on the rise how can the average person protect themselves? Well, an important coverage that is often overlooked is a Personal Liability Umbrella. An Umbrella policy provides excess coverage over and above the Auto Liability Limits and Homeowner’s Liability Limits. These policies are written on $1,000,000 increments and are usually relatively inexpensive for the amount of coverage they provide. If you have any more questions regarding a Personal Liability Umbrella please get in contact with us so that we can answer them for you!

Uninsured Driver Numbers Rising Dramatically

In a recent article, the Big I’s Paul Buse pointed out some staggering trends in relation to the number of people that are driving uninsured. With the recession in full force many people are dropping their Auto Insurance coverage altogether, even though it is illegal to do so. This in turn increases the risk for of being in an accident with an uninsured driver and not being compensated for it.

Mr. Buse points out some staggering numbers to back up his claims. In the article titled, “Uninsured Motorist Exposure Rising Dramatically” he states that the Insurance Research Council reported that nationally 1 in 6 drivers was likely to be uninsured. In areas where the recession hit the hardest the numbers are closer to 1 in 3 people are driving uninsured.

The Uninsured Motorist coverage on your personal auto policy would be the coverage that would respond in the event you were struck by an uninsured driver. This is often a coverage that is overlooked by people but it is very important when you consider the previous statistics.
